Electrolysis and metal extraction

The following is a chem guide link. Remember that the extraction of reactive metals didn't really occur until the discovery of electricity and electrolysis. Electrolysis is where a voltage is applied to cause a non spontaneous reaction to occur

Electrolysis

The following is a link to the interactive syllabus. It has the standard hydrogen electrode, the standard electrode potential values, balancing redox reactions, working out voltage, predicting spontaneity and something about electrolysis.

Voltaic Cells

Look at this link, it allows you to change metals and solutions and see the direction of electrons and ions, and the voltage that will be obtained.

Homework Redox

Please finish the redox titration sheet and work out the half equations and the overall equation for the 'breathaliser test' that I showed you.  Suggest reasons why the acidified potassium dichromate test may be inaccurate and research how alcohol is tested for now.

Voltaic Cells

Redox reactions can be used to convert chemical energy to electrical energy. Find out about the first voltaic cell that was made and then look at this video clip to see the basic principles of what happens.

Oxidation and Reduction

Hi I hope that you had a great Christmas and New Year. Cran-Montana is sunny with snow at the moment :)

Please look at the following links in preparation for the next topic, Oxidation/reduction.

Happy Christmas

Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas

Work out all the chemistry involved here. its simply copper in silver nitrate solution. However, to explain it properly you need the following topics: Redox, complex formation, bonding and electronic structure (d orbitals splitting etc.)

Enjoy yourself and work really hard to make sure that all the topics covered are known and understood.
